Tobacco Leaf Shell Dish
This exquisite Tobacco Leaf design originated in 18th-century China, likely created for export to the Portuguese and Brazilian markets. Among all dinnerware patterns of the era, Tobacco Leaf was the most luxurious and highly prized.
George and Martha Washington owned pieces in this iconic pattern, and examples are now preserved in the Mount Vernon collection.
A graceful phoenix bird rests among the vibrant leaves of the flowering Nicotiana (Tobacco) plant, richly rendered in twenty-seven distinct colors and accented with hand-applied 22k gold. This reproduction is based on a historic original now on view at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
