Tobacco Leaf Plate Ornament
This miniature plate ornament is reminiscent of the beautiful historic Tobacco Leaf china pattern. The extravagant design was originally made in China, probably for export to the Portuguese and Brazilian markets. Of all the 18th century dinnerware patterns, this is the most highly prized. Some of George and Martha Washington china pieces in this pattern are now in the Mount Vernon collection.
This reproduction design features a small phoenix bird perched on the vibrant leaves of the flowering Nocotiana (Tobacco) plant. The original Mottahedeh pattern had twenty-seven colors and streaks of 22k gold; the original dish pattern is now on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
