Cockscomb: Celosia species

Celosia species was commonly grown in 18th century flower gardens.

Celosia is an annual and prefers full to partial sun. Crested, spiked, and feathered plumes in bright shades of red, yellow, orange, pink, and purple grow on 2-4' tall plants. Celosia will set seed and self-sow in the garden producing plants for future enjoyment. The long-lasting flowers are great in fresh flower bouquets and are also suitable for drying.

Direct sow seeds into the garden after the last frost date or started indoors. For germination indoors sow seeds 4-6 weeks before the last frost date. Cover lightly with 1/8" of germination mix and keep moist but not wet. Seeds germinate in 7-14 days at a soil temperature of 75°F. Transplant to the garden after the last frost date and temperatures are consistently 65-70°F. USDA Zones 2-11.
