Globe Amaranth Seed Pack
Globe Amaranth: Gomphrena globosa
Gomphrena globosa is mentioned in a letter written by John Custis, of Williamsburg, in 1742. Commenting on globe amaranth, he says, "I esteem it one of the prettiest things I ever saw."
Globe amaranth is an annual and prefers dry, sunny locations, although young plants need regular moisture to become established. Plants grow 1-2' tall and 1' wide and produce bright magenta-colored bracts. Deadhead by pinching the faded bloom, including the attached stem down to the succeeding bloom or leaf. Removing the faded blooms will encourage more flowers, and the plants will bloom from early summer until frost. Blooms are wonderful for fresh and dried floral arrangements.
Start the plants from seed indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost date, or direct sow into the garden after the last frost date. Cover seeds with 1/8" of soil. Seeds germinate in 10-14 days at soil temperatures between 70-75°F. USDA Zones 2-11.
