Tobacco Leaf Bread & Butter Plate
This elegant Tobacco Leaf design was originally created in China during the 18th century, likely for export to the Portuguese and Brazilian markets. Among all porcelain patterns of its time, Tobacco Leaf was the most lavish and highly prized.
George and Martha Washington owned pieces of this very pattern, and several examples are preserved today in the Mount Vernon collection.
A signature element of the design is the small phoenix bird, perched among the vibrant leaves of the flowering Nicotiana (Tobacco) plant. The pattern is richly detailed with twenty-seven colors and 22k gold accents, inspired by an original piece now on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
