Joseph's Coat Amaranthus tricolor, originally from South Central Mexico, is mentioned in American writings as early as 1786. Its common name, Joseph's Coat, comes from the Biblical figure, Joseph, and the story of his coat of many colors. Joseph's Coat is an easy-to-grow annual that prefers full sun. Plants grow 1-3' tall and up to 1' wide. Plants are grown for the brightly colored red, yellow, and green leaves. Ideal for use as an accent plant or in a mixed flower bed. Sow seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last spring frost date, or direct sow into the garden after the last frost date. Sow seeds 18" apart and gently press into the soil. Cover seeds with 1/8" of soil and keep the soil moist but not wet.

Seeds germinate in 10-21 days at soil temperatures between 65-75Ā°F.

USDA Zones 2-11.
