Mount Vernon Reverse Painting Mirror
This mirror was inspired by a 19th century looking glass in the collections at Mount Vernon. It features a reverse-painted scene of the east front of the Mansion. A decorative technique long practiced by artists in Asia and extremely fashionable in the 18th and 19th centuries, reverse painting requires the artist to paint the design on one side of the glass so it may be viewed the correct way from the other side.
The mirror measures 27 ½" x 46 ½" overall and is 22 ½" at the base.
From The George Washington Collection of Mirrors by Friedman Brothers, manufacturers of fine decorative arts since 1903. Friedman Brothers mirrors are handmade in the USA.
