Silver Dollar Plant: Lunaria annua

Lunaria annua was brought to North America from Europe. It was growing in American colonial gardens as early as 1767. The common name, silver dollar plant, comes from the seed pods that form; when mature, the papery covering resembles the 'silver dollar'.

The silver dollar plant is biennial and prefers full sun to part shade and moist, well-drained soil. It grows 2-3' tall and produces purple flowers in the late spring. Silver dollar plants are an excellent addition to dried arrangements.

Direct sow seeds into the garden after the last frost date and space 12-18" apart. Seeds germinate in 14-28 days and will bloom the following spring. Readily self-sows. USDA Zones 4-9.
