New York Ironweed: Vernonia noveboracensis

Vernonia noveboracensis is native to the stream banks and moist thickets of the eastern United States.
New York ironweed is an upright perennial and prefers full sun and moist soil. It grows 4-6' tall and 3-4' wide and produces clusters of purple flowers from August to September. It is a great plant for the back of the cottage garden and is equally pleasing in meadows or naturalized areas. The 'iron-like' qualities of this plant help it tolerate deer, clay soil, and wet soil.
Seeds require a cold treatment. In the fall, direct sow in the garden and cover with 1/4" of soil. Seeds will germinate in the spring. Alternately, the seeds may be mixed with moist germination mix, put in a plastic bag, and refrigerated for 6-8 weeks. Sow the seeds in a tray of moist germination mix. Harden off and transplanted into the garden. USDA Zones 5-9.
