Purple Heart Ornament
Purple Heart ornament crafted exclusively for Mount Vernon. In 1782, General George Washington created this Badge of Military Merit made of purple silk and silver thread, and fashioned into a heart shape. With this badge Washington established a policy of formal recognition of soldiersâ heroic contributions, rather than recognizing only officersâ actions. In 1932, this award became the Purple Heart displaying George Washingtonâs profile.
This handmade item is one of the unique ornaments of the St. Nicolas line of products, manufactured by a British company which has worked with a small Christian charity in Thailand and India for 25 years helping disadvantaged rural women work in their own community by sewing decorations at home.
This ornament displays various embedded beads and a gold embroidered trim. âMount Vernonâ is embroidered on the back side and a gold thread allows for easy display. Size is approximately 4 ½" x 3 ½".
