The Culper Spy Ring Code Book was created and used by the Culper spy ring to compose and send coded messages to George Washington's headquarters during the Revolutionary War. In 1778, under the orders of General Washington, Major Benjamin Tallmadge organized the ring to gather information on British troop movements, fortification, and military plans in the New York area. Informants used fake names and a numerical code book consisting of 763 numbers representing words, names, and places to communicate their information. The code book that Tallmadge developed was essential in protecting the vital communications and identities of this important intelligence gathering group. This book contains the actual code with each entry spelled as it was in the original document. A few entries were unreadable and thus have been omitted from this book. Use the code to decipher a sample message included in this book and then create your own coded messages. The 5 ½" x 4 ¼" book closes with a circular latch held together with twine. For ages 8 through adult.
