Dark Red Kidney Bean: Phaseolus vulgaris
The dark red kidney bean is a bush bean listed in the 1763 edition of Philip Miller's Gardener's Dictionary. Later, it was listed for sale by seedsman Minton Collins in the Virginia Gazette and Richmond Daily Advertiser on January 24, 1793.
This bush variety grows 2-2.5' tall.
Beans grow best in full sun with moist, well-drained soil. Once spring soil temperatures are 65°F or warmer, soak beans in water for a couple of hours. Then, direct sow beans into the garden, 2-3" apart and 1" deep. Thin plants to 6" apart. 50-60 days for green beans. 100+ days for dry beans.
