Mount Vernon was home to many sheep in George Washington’s time. His flock numbered from 600 to 1,000 which provided wool for clothing and blankets, manure for crop fertilization, meat for mutton and spring lamb, and lanolin for ointments. Today, Mount Vernon raises Hog Island sheep, a rare breed that is native to Virginia and dates back to the 1600s. Due to the critically low numbers of Hog Island sheep, Mount Vernon is involved in a careful breeding program.
This Hog Island sheep is hand-painted, hand-carved and measures 2 ¾” x 2”, with a 4” jute string for hanging. Start a farm-animal collection by combining this with our wooden Dominique chicken and wooden Ossabow Island hog ornaments.
