Purple Heart Ornament
Purple Heart ornament crafted exclusively for Mount Vernon. In 1782, General George Washington created this Badge of Military MeritĀ made of purple silk and silver thread, and fashioned into a heart shape. With this badge Washington established a policy of formal recognition of soldiersā heroic contributions, rather than recognizing only officersā actions. In 1932, this award became the Purple Heart displaying George Washingtonās profile.
This handmade item is one of the unique ornaments of the St. Nicolas line of products, manufactured by a British company which has worked with a small Christian charity in Thailand and India for 25 years helping disadvantaged rural women work in their own community by sewing decorations at home.
This ornament displays various embedded beads and a gold embroidered trim. āMount Vernonā is embroidered on the back side and a gold thread allows for easy display. Size is approximately 4 Ā½" x 3 Ā½".
