Songbook - Music for the First President
By Kate Van Winkle Keller. ISBN 1-877984-24-8. Copyright 1999. Softcover with 32 pages.
Kate Van Winkle Keller writes about music that George Washington knew or might have heard in his home or in the streets, in taverns and theaters, on the parade ground, the battlefield, or in ballrooms and concert halls. Over half of these pieces are American compositions, several of which feature locally composed lyrics set to older British tunes. Five were composed specifically to honor Washington. The actual sheet music is given, and the book is intended as a companion music book to the CD recording of David and Ginger Hildebrand.
The pieces appear in the same order they are heard on the recording, and chords have been added to make the music more accessible to musicians of today. An introductory essay, period illustrations, and historical notes are included. The book will lie flat on a music stand.
