Dixie Speckled Bean
Dixie Speckled Butterpea Lima Bean: Phaseolus lunatus
In the 18th century, the lima or butterbean was often called the bushel or sugar bean. The Dixie speckled bean is a sweet and tender heirloom bean. It is an excellent choice for making baked beans, soups, and bean salads.
Beans grow best in full sun with moist, well-drained soil. The vigorous plants grow 2' tall and perform well even in hot, dry weather.
Beans are not cold tolerant and need warm soil of 65°F or higher. Once spring soil temperatures are 65°F or warmer, soak beans in water for a couple of hours, and then direct sow beans into the garden, 2-3" apart and 1" deep. Thin plants to 6" apart. 76 days for green beans. 90+ days for dry beans.
