George Washington's reputation as an avid plantsman and farmer was well known. Foreign governments, friend admirers, even strangers supplied him with a steady stream of seeds, slips, bulbs, and cuttings from all over the world. William Washington, a relative living in South Carolina, sent southern magnolia that adapted beautifully to Mount Vernon. "Magnolia" became the name of an Arabian racing stallion owned by George Washington.
The rosy purple magnolia blossoms on this dessert plate resemble those of the Chinese Magnolia. There are cherry blossoms and sprigs of cherries with "Mount Vernon" written just below one of the green leaves. The edge of the rimmed plate is pale green. The porcelain dessert plate is approximately 8" in diameter.

Hand decorated in Virginia.
