Description

"We…all unite in offering you, & yours, the compliments of the season; and the return of many, many more, and happy ones. G Washington". George Washington to William Dandridge December 25, 1797.

Christmas was primarily a religious holiday in 18th century Virginia. It was also a festive occasion marked by visits between friends and relatives, celebratory parties and public assemblies. The twelve days of Christmas, ending with balls and parties on Epiphany (January 6), extended the holiday season. The holiday season held special meaning for the Washingtons particularly since George and Martha chose January 6 as the day for their wedding in 1759.

Mount Vernon's 2017 annual ornament is inspired by the twelve festive Christmas trees that grace Mount Vernon's Ford Orientation Center and the Donald W. Reynolds Museum & Education Center. Ranging in heights of up to 12 feet tall, the trees are creatively decorated with themes relating to Mount Vernon, George Washington, and the 18th century. Adorning this ornament are pineapples, the 18th-century symbol of hospitality, festive fruits, and colonial chamber-sticks. Crowning the top is George Washington's dove of peace weathervane. Nestled below the tree is Washington's beloved home, Mount Vernon.

The 2017 Mount Vernon ornament is approximately 3" tall and 2 ¼" wide. Red ribbon for hanging included. The ornament is in a colorful gift box with an informative enclosure card providing a brief history of the General and Lady Washington's Christmas holidays.
