Description

This full 360 degree panorama of Mount Vernon's Grist Mill is taken from a vantage point near the tailrace on Dogue Creek. When Washington constructed the mill in 1770, it was productive but highly labor intensive. As president, Washington visited an old ally, Joseph Tatnall, who had supplied the revolutionary army with flour during the dark days at Valley Forge. Tatnall introduced Washington to the new Evans automated milling system and by 1791 the patented invention was in full operation at Mount Vernon. At the time it was one of only a handful of such efficient operations in the country and in subsequent years the estate was well rewarded for Washington's foresight.
The 360-degree panoramic sepia photograph is printed on FujiColor Professional Paper. Nielsen Frosted Walnut frame matted with four-ply acid-free white museum board mounted on 3/16" acid-free white foam core. The framed print measures 40" x 12". Signed and numbered by the photographer, James O. Phelps.
