Description

Iberis umbellata

Iberis umbellata is native to the Mediterranean region and was introduced to cultivation in the 1600s. Candytuft was mentioned by plantsman Bernard McMahon in his 1802 seed list publication.

Globe candytuft is an annual that requires full sun. This plant prefers well-drained soil, however it can grow in nutritionally poor soil. The height of this plant can reach 1.5’ and spread to 1.5’ wide. This lavender to white flower blooms from May-June in corymbs. Flowers attract bees and butterflies.

Direct sow the seeds into the garden after the last frost date. Cover seeds with ¼” of soil and keep the soil moist but not wet. Do not cover. Seeds germinate in 16-20 days at soil temperatures of 65-70°F. Once established, the Globe candytuft readily self-sows.
