Description
This light-weight cotton t-shirt is perfect for dog lovers and history buffs alike! Front logo represents one of the many hounds found at Mount Vernon during Washington's time. Design on back displays George Washington standing in front of the mansion surrounded by seven of his beloved dogs: Madame Moose, Drunkard, True Love, Sweet Lips, Tippler, Venus and Taster.
During his lifetime, Washington kept a variety of dogs at his estate. Records mention several French hounds named Tipsy, Mopsey, Truelove, and Ragman, as well as Greyhounds, Newfoundlands, Briards, and various types of spaniels, terriers, and toy breeds.
Dogs brought comic relief to the Washington clan, especially the beloved (and brazen) French hound, Vulcan. The mischievous Vulcan sunk his teeth into a savory ham one day and carried it cleanly away as the kitchen staff chased after him.
Fun fact: Did you know that George Washington is credited by the American Kennel Club with developing the breed known as the American Foxhound? This new breed resulted from a mixture of different hounds imported from England and France, with local American stock. Today, the American Foxhound is the state dog of Virginia.
