For his first inauguration, Washington chose a plain brown suit cut from American wool and adorned with neatly cast brass buttons that prominently features an American bald eagle. The eagle is emblazoned with a shield on its chest and clutching symbols of war and peace in its talons. Above its head the sun is shining. Today this same design serves as the Great Seal of the United States. The date engraved on the original button is March 4, 1789, although Washington was not inaugurated president until April 30.
The set of nine buttons include three buttons with a diameter of 7/8" and six buttons with a diameter of ½". Presented in a black velvet gift box with provenance card included. Made in the USA by the Waterbury Button Company, makers of premium stamped brass metal buttons since 1812.
