Feather Brooch - Gold and Topaz Crystal
This sparkling gold and topaz crystal Aigrette brooch is perfect to wear at weddings, proms, dances, or everyday on a suit. It will complement any hair updo, can be worn as a hat pin, or also as a beautifully decorative pendant (hidden loop in back can fit a variety of chain sizes).
Brooch measures 3 inches high by 2-1/2 inches wide.
Martha Washington and her daughter Martha "Patsy" Custis were fond of spray of flowers jewelry, known as "aigrette" or "egret" because of its resemblance to the crest or feathered plume of the Lesser White Heron. Accordingly, the jewel was worn at the center of a lady's elaborately piled coiffure. Patsy is depicted wearing a similar aigrette of paste or pearls in her 1772 miniature portrait by Charles Willson Peale.
