Butterfly Weed: Asclepias tuberosa

Butterfly Weed is a native perennial to the U.S. and Canada. The plant was introduced into Europe in 1690. Flower stalks 2 - 2 1/2' feet appear in mid-summer displaying delightful orange flowers. Flowers are excellent for cutting and the seed pods are a nice addition to a dried arrangement.

Sow seeds indoors 8-12 weeks before last frost date at 70˚F.  For improved germination, provide 4 weeks of cold, moist stratification before sowing.  Transplant to 3" pots once they have several true leaves, then harden off and transplant outdoors after last frost.  Alternatively, direct sow seeds outdoors in fall. USDA Zones 3-9.
