"A Tale of Two Plantations: Slave Life in Jamaica and Virginia" is the result of a 40 year intensive investigation into the lives of 2,000 slaves living on the Mesopotamia sugar estate in Jamaica and the Mount Airy plantation in tidewater Virginia. Records from both plantations provide the stories of three generations of slaves living in starkly different circumstances with deadly work regimens, rampant disease, and dependence on slave trade for new laborers in Jamaica, and continual expansion of the slave population in Virginia where slaves were sold or moved to different sites and families routinely divided.
