Silver certificates were first made in 1878. The size was large and the artwork was sometimes stunning. Much plainer, modern sized notes were made from 1928 to the 1960's. They are distinguished by "Silver Certificate" at the top and by blue seals and serial numbers. The Department of the Treasury issued to the public Silver Certificates which could be exchanged for silver dollars. This practice stopped in 1968 when the price of silver rose too high. Even though Silver Certificates are no longer printed, those which remain outstanding are still legal tender and can be spent just like a Federal Reserve Note. The dates of Silver certificates and all U.S. paper money changed only when the design changed. This 7 ¼” x 3 1/8” silver certificate is dated 1923. This is original currency, not a reproduction.
