This $1.25 dollar bank note was issued in 1862 by the Farmers & Merchants Bank of Washington DC. Features a vignette of the U.S. Capitol, a plain back and a handwritten number 30. Red ink is visible on reverse. 

During the Civil War, the U.S. government outlawed the previously legal practice of allowing any bank, company and even individuals to issue their own paper money.
