Appealing $5 banknote made in Virginia and issued by the Bank of the Commonwealth. Nice red ink design. Hand numbered 555 and issued May 5, 1858. Tobacco field and business scene in the center; an oval portrait of George Washington on the lower left; and Virginia's seal on the right. Plain back. Hand signed and hand dated. 

During the Civil War, the U.S. government outlawed the previously legal practice of allowing any bank, company and even individuals to issue their own paper money.
