This silver piece of eight from 1800 was the precursor to the U.S. Silver Dollar. King Charles of Spain's profile in soldier's dress with laurel wreath shows on the front of the coin with "Carolus IIII Dei Gratia 1800" inscribed around the edge. "Hispan Et Ind Rex PST 8 R P P" and crowned Spanish arms between the Pillars of Hercules show on the reverse.

Silver pieces of eight, known as “the coin used round the world” were legal tender in the U.S. until 1857. This large coin was made in Potosi, Bolivia (see PTS monogram on reverse).
