1788 Vermont Copper Antique Coin

SKU 30695

In the 1780s, several States minted their own coins. Vermont coinage started in 1785 while Vermont was still a Republic (it became the 14th American colony in 1777 and the 14th American State in 1791).

This is a very scarce coin which combines a bust type obverse and a reverse meant to mimic British copper coins, to ensure acceptance. INDE ET LIB is an abbreviation of Independence and Liberty. British coins were still plentiful despite the fact that America had already become independent.
