1783 Silver Piece of Eight Antique Coin
This large silver piece of eight was the precursor to the U.S. silver quarter. Obverse side: profile of King Charles of Spain, CAROLUS III DEI GRATIA 1783 (Charles III, by the Grace of God) inscribed around the edge. Reverse side: an abbreviation for King of Spain and the Indies and a design of the crowned Spanish arms between the Pillars of Hercules. Silver pieces of eight were legal tender in the U.S. until 1857.
