1697 Silver English Shilling Antique Coin
This well preserved silver shilling was minted in 1697. Obverse features the bust of King William III facing right, with the surrounding legend: GVLIELMVS-III-DEI-GRATIA. William III was the only Dutch born King of England, thus was also known as William of Orange. He was King of England, Ireland and Scotland from 1689 to 1702.
Reverse side: William’s crown over symbols of four countries: lions for England; rampant lion for Scotland; fleurs-de-lis for France and Celtic harp for Ireland. Minted in the Tower of London when Isaac Newton was "warden" of the royal mint.
