Love-Lies-Bleeding: Amaranthus caudatus

Amaranthus caudatus was growing in Colonial gardens by the 1700s. Its common name, love-lies-bleeding, comes from the long, reddish-pink tassel-like flowers that hang from the plant.

An easy-to-grow annual, love-lies-bleeding prefers full sun to part shade. Plants grow 2-4' tall and 1-2' wide. Flowering starts in mid-summer and continues until frost. Flowers extend 12-24" in length. The plants may need staking or other support to remain upright. Flower stems can be cut and used in fresh or dry floral arrangements.

Sow seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last spring frost date or direct sow into the garden after the last frost date. Sow seeds 18" apart and gently press into the soil. Cover seeds with 1/8" of soil and keep the soil moist but not wet. Seeds germinate in 10-21 days at soil temperatures between 65-75°F. USDA Zones 2-11.
