This whimsical ornament features gingerbread men, candy canes, gumdrops, gingerbread interpretation of the mansion, and George and Martha Washington. Gingerbread recipes are found in several relatives’ manuscripts, ranging from those in the Custis family’s Book of Cookery, which may date back to the 17th century, to the mid-19th century recipes compiled by Martha Washington’s great-granddaughter Mary Anna Randolph Custis-Lee. One of the better known family gingerbread recipes is attributed to George Washington’s mother, Mary Ball Washington. She is said to have served it to Lafayette when he visited.

Mount Vernon's 2019 annual ornament is inspired by the twelve festive Christmas trees that grace Mount Vernon's Ford Orientation Center and the Donald W. Reynolds Museum & Education Center. Ranging in heights of up to 12 feet tall, the trees are creatively decorated with themes relating to Mount Vernon, George Washington, and the 18th century.

The 2019 Mount Vernon ornament is approximately 3" tall and 2 ¼” wide. The ornament is presented in a cheery gift box with an informative enclosure card providing a brief history of Mount Vernon and recipes, red ribbon for hanging.
