Oranges and Lemons Painting by Simon Bull
During his July 2019 visit, Simon Bull was inspired by the fruit trees and nature provided in Mount Vernon’s Upper Garden. Two red love birds are tucked away on a low branch of this vividly colored tree of oranges and lemons. Washington notes in his diary in 1785 that he received "a few young trees of the Civil or sower oranges in a box." In the previous year, he was gifted a lemon tree from Margaret Tilghman Carroll of Baltimore. Both oranges and lemons are used in the recipe for Martha Washington’s Rum Punch.
The Oranges and Lemons Painting is on a 36” x 48” canvas.
This original, one-of-kind artwork was painted exclusively for Mount Vernon during Simon Bull’s Plein Air Art Event July 2019.
