George Washington chose the site for the White House and laid the cornerstone of the US Capitol in his namesake city, Washington, DC. In today's DC, many visitors stop at the National Zoo to see the pandas. In the 18th century, before there was a zoo in DC, George Washington had a significant interest in both domestic and rare animals, and often paid to see them on display. Over the years, Washington and various members of his household were able to learn something about the world outside of Virginia from the itinerant entertainers who traveled along the eastern seaboard for fairs and large events. Many of these individuals worked with rarely seen or specially-trained animals such as the camel that visited Mount Vernon in 1787. In 1766, Washington recorded paying 10 shillings to see a "Lyoness" and later saw a "Cugar" and a "Sea Leopard".
