1861 $1 Dollar Antique Banknote

This $1 Dollar banknote was issued on July 1, 1861 by the Bank of Richmond in the State of Virginia. It is beautifully preserved, and features a vignette of George Washington in the center. 

Beginning in March 1861, the Confederate States of America began printing their own paper banknotes. Later on during the Civil War, the U.S. government outlawed the previously legal practice of allowing any bank, company and even individuals to issue their own paper money.
