Archaeology Projects

Mount Vernon's professional archaeologists recently finished fieldwork on two large projects and are now in the archaeological laboratory cataloguing and researching to complete those projects. 
  • The Upper Garden was excavated between 2005 - 2010 and a restoration of George Washington's 1799 garden opens to the public in 2011 based upon the archaeological discoveries.
  • Archaeologists recently conducted an excavation in advance of construction of the Fred W. Smith National Library for the Study of George Washington.  They found hundreds of artifacts dating from about 1790 - 1830 on the future library site.

We are also researching artifacts excavated from the South Grove Midden.  This is a pile of trash from the early years of George and Martha Washington's marriage and the artifacts are important clues about life in the Mansion and the Kitchen.  This collection will go online in 2011.  You can follow this exciting research on our site or at our Mount Vernon Mystery Midden Facebook page.
